There is the captain slot as usual (commander I guess), and there is hero slot where you drag your companions and other clan members.

In your party menu, on the companion in question. You'll see a banner with a number right to their name. >> Click on that banner until the number says III >> Click done. Doing as said above will treat them as cavalry as far as the game is concerned but the list OP refers to will still count them as infantry.

There needs to be some quality of life improvements for companions being sent out on their own. First, they get captured too often. There needs to be a way to control how aggressive they are or maybe there is something wrong with the way battles are resolved (e.g. looter auto-resolve bogginess affecting companion fights). As soon as you load up in the new place, press and hold the Alt button to track the major NPCs that you can recruit. Once you spot one, simply approach the NPC and interact with them. And after that you’ll see an option to hire a Companion to your party in Mount Blade 2 Bannerlord. Then, pay the requested Denar they ask for being in your army.
