I summarized it for my partner like this: -Ascended only matters for the purpose of doing a certain high end PvE content called Fractals (mini-dungeons). Armor is the hardest to obtain and is only a 5% stat increase, trinkets/weapons are 15%. Your stats are normalized in PvP. Exotic is fine for even raiding.
Don't be afraid of getting into stuff. You can get ascended gear drom PvP and WvW but it requires some effort. Ascended trinkets are easy to get from Fractals scales 1-20. Most open world content doesn't give ascended so if you're into open world content like raids or strikes where you can join trainings, you can get ascended gear easily. Best way to get the Mats is usually: Pick a good Gold Farm and buy them of the TP.
